Following the three Sonatas and three Partitas (BWV 1001-1006) for unaccompanied violin with which Johann Sebastian Bach set the standard by which solo violin works have been measured since 1720, the genre of solo Sonata or Partita largely fell into a state of neglect. Indeed, it is true that such compositions came from lesser known composers in the period following Bach; these works did not fuel efforts to expand the genre, and to a large extent, they can be seen as serving a more pedagogical purpose than an artistic one.
With the emergence of Max Reger (1873-1916), a renaissance was initiated, the effect of which was felt well into the period of contemporary music.
