“Our debut album is a lovingly curated musical journey, encompassing both our shared perspective on beloved works and relatively unknown repertoire we believe is equally deserving of attention. This album features our own arrangements, including a reduction of Faure's adored Pavane from its orchestral original, and Bach's solo keyboard inventions re-imagined on cello and guitar. These are presented alongside contemporary works, including a colorful three movement piece by Bolivian composer Jaime Zenamon, and the debut recording of Arafura Arioso by esteemed Australian composer Ross Edwards. The entire album is designed to highlight the range and of timbral possibilities of this under explored instrumental pairing. Our collaboration began as a romantic relationship in 2012. We are now happily married and live in New York City.”

Quotes & Reviews

A self-labelled ‘happily married couple’, they play like one, with a harmony of purpose as sure as their intonation. Boyd is a fine guitarist; if he’s new to these pages, Laura Metcalf is no stranger to them, her ‘suave, experienced bow arm’ having gained Jed Distler’s approval last year (9/16). That right arm is the motor for a gloriously warm and rich tone, well suited to the repertoire on this superbly engineered debut album for the duo.

Guy Rickards, Gramophone

★ ★ ★ ★

A delightful disc full of well-known works and hidden treasures.

There is a sense of lightness and joy that permeates Boyd Meets Girl, the works are uniformly a pleasure to listen to, and, no doubt, to perform – but there is also plenty to sink your teeth into.

Angus McPherson, Limelight

The pair have an easy, natural chemistry that translates to every style they tackle on this eclectic outing…

All in all, an excellent outing!

Blair Jackson, Classical Guitar Magazine

It is a musical match made in Heaven.

Rafael de Acha, Rafael's Music Notes

Listeners intrigued by this instrumental combination and interested in hearing some very fine, virtuosic and sensitive playing will enjoy the disc.

Mark Estren, Infodad

…stunningly beautiful arrangements and exceptional performances…

Bradford Werner, This Is Classical Guitar

The most innovative arrangement is that of Gabriel Fauré’s orchestral scoring of his “Pavan.” This allows for some interesting approaches to the sharing of the thematic material, which Boyd and Metcalf definitely handle imaginatively…

Stephen Smoliar, The Rehearsal Studio

…I was intrigued to hear this duo project. I was not disappointed.

Blair Jackson, Classical Guitar Magazine

It really works - but don't take my word for it; go listen to the whole album.

Jeremy Shatain, AnEarful

…a thoughtful, engaging, entertaining, and utterly delightful program.

Clinton White, Canberra Critics Circle

…plenty of thrills… What will this pair of musicians do next? Looking forward to finding out…

Greg Hettmansberger, What Greg Says

A warm and resonant recorded sound quality complements a superb CD that is an absolute delight from beginning to end.

Terry Robbins, The WholeNote

If you have expectations about the wonderful sound of cello and classical guitar together, they are met with absolute style and grace in the twin sonarities of Boyd and Metcalfe. More than met, really. Boyd Meets Girl is one of those fortunate intersection where we hear bells as much as they do.

A program that will appeal to a wide swath of listeners. It will do so with artistry at the highest levels.

Grego Applegate Edwards, Gapplegate Classical-Modern Music Review

Exquisitely beautiful music from Bach, Fauré, Falla, and even Arvo Pärt make this something to cherish. As with the other Sono Luminus recordings I’ve heard, the recording is excellent…This is very highly recommended.

Bill Dodd, NativeDSD

This husband-and-wife duo have turned in one gorgeous, interesting debut album.

Steve Estep, The Absolute Sound
