Confronted by four keyboards, pedals and nine thousand pipes, one is aware that the organ is an instrument capable of communicating a powerful musical expression. In the nineteenth century the French school of organ playing emerged as a style distinctive for its ability to evoke a stirring emotional response. The elements of massive sonority, specific tonal colors and facile technique unite with passionate virtuosity drawing listener into a compelling musical experience. Widor, the great organ symphonist described the experience in these words, "Organ playing is the manifestation of a will filled with vision of eternity."
